9 Skin Care Myths Busted!

What do you really know about your skin?

I bet many of you think your skin is fully protected from the sun if you just use a higher SPF. Am I right?

Or how about by age 18 all the damage that can be done has already happened?

Well I hate to break it to you, but these are all fallacies that have either gone on throughout time, or been invented by the less scrupulous cosmetics companies out there.

The Human Form Is Perfection​

Rumor: Oily Skin Is Less Susceptible To Wrinkles Than Dry Skin


Further research is required to verify this claim, but the idea makes a lot of sense.

Brandt explains that oily skin may be better at delaying the development of wrinkles because they it tends to be thicker, essentially giving it a stronger natural protection from sun damage.

Ruthie Harper, a Texas-based internist suggests that the phenomenon has to do with hormones.

She says that women with oily skin usually have higher testosterone levels, which skin experts link to better stimulation of collagen production.

However, this isn’t to say that oily skin never looks old.

Other factors also come into play including smoking and sun exposure. These two are known to speed up the aging process, prompting wrinkles to appear regardless of skin type.

Rumor: Botox Prevents Wrinkles


In theory, one can say that this is true. However, no long-term evidence supports this claim.

Cosmetic dermatologist Fredric Brandt who practices in Coral Gables, Florida and New York City says that by relaxing the muscles that usually contract, you become less susceptible to developing creases over time.

But other skin care tips such as wearing sunscreen with sufficient SPF and practicing basic skin cleansing methods have been shown to be more effective, reliable and affordable when it comes to preventing wrinkles.

Los Angeles and New York City based dermatologist Karyn Grossman suggests that those who still want to go under the needle begin Botox treatments after the onset of fine lines and other signs of aging.

Rumor: Eating Junk Food Leads To Acne


According to New York dermatologist David Bank, no studies have shown that eating junk food directly leads to acne breakouts.

Most dermatologists interviewed also share the same sentiment as Bank. But recently, links have been made between excessive consumption of foods with high glycemic index (foods with high amounts of refined carbohydrates) and acne breakouts among individuals with acne-prone skin.


One of the things that aggravate acne is inflammation. High-glycemic foods cause blood sugar and insulin levels to rise quickly, causing inflammation. Some examples of high-glycemic foods include white rice, sugary drinks and sweets.

It’s interesting to note that while dark chocolate offers plenty of health benefits, milk chocolate is associated to acne breakouts.

The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology published a recent study in which Italian researchers discovered that drinking three glasses or more of skim or full-fat milk could lead to a higher risk of moderate to severe acne breakouts in people who are predisposed to acne flare-ups.

According to Harper, the key is to cut down on possible triggers and eat a balanced diet, preferably foods that are known for their anti-inflammatory benefits.

These include:

  • Green tea
  • Fish
  • Broccoli
  • Omega-3 fatty acids sources

These healthy acids have been attributed for the 32% decrease in the risk of developing acne when taken at least once per week.

However just because you won’t breakout in spots, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still make sure to eat healthy and possibly consider a detox

Rumor: Skin Care Products From The Same Line Must Be Used For Optimal Results


Bank emphasizes that this is all just clever marketing.

There’s absolutely no need to purchase skin care products under the same brand.

However, there are cases in which companies use specific ingredients that prove to complement each other, potentially providing very effective results. For instance, you may stumble upon a blemish kit with an anti-acne cleaner containing salicylic acid to unclog pores and a gel treatment containing glycolic acid to prevent future breakouts.

If you’re dealing with a specific problem, then going after this prepackaged approach can make things a lot simpler and more effective.

Rumor: It’s Possible To Get Rid Of Cellulite


New York City dermatologist Howard Sobel explains that no cellulite treatment offers permanent results.

There are treatments that can work effectively when it comes to minimizing the appearance of cellulite, such as creams with aminophylline (known for breaking down fat cells) and massaging devices that aim to iron out fat cells in order to reduce their appearance.

While you might see results, these only last a few months at best.

Sobel says that even liposuction, which is an advanced treatment that gets rid of deep fat deposits, doesn’t do a great job of improving how the surface of the skin looks.

But there proves to be a sliver of hope: Cellulaze is a laser treatment that works by cutting the vertical bands underneath the skin that are linked to the dimpling effect, thus leading to a smoother skin surface.

Just recently, the treatment received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for fixing cellulite long-term, as New Jersey plastic surgeon Barry Di Bernardo explains, who also served as the lead clinical investigator for the FDA trials of Cellulaze.

The treatment, however, comes with a hefty price tag. You only need a single sessions, and you’ll have to pay $3,000 to $8,000 for it.

Rumor: Higher SPF Sunscreen Lets You Stay In The Sun Longer

No, absolutely not!

While many people think SPF is an indication of how long a product will protect you, that is not the case! It’s actually an indication of how well it works.

Not only that, but while SPF can protect from cancer-causing UVB rays, it does nothing to shield from UVA rays. These rays are known to cause skin cancer, and have links to causing wrinkles.

What should you use?

A “broad-spectrum” type sunscreen, which protects against UVA as well as UVB rays. Also, make sure it’s SPF 30.

Why’s the SPF 30 important?

SPF 30 filters out 97% of the sun’s rays. This is as much as can be blocked out with modern technology, or at least with modern sunscreens. Keep in mind, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours.

Rumor: Your Skin Gets Used To Products Over Time


It can really depend on the active ingredients used in the product.

Ingredients such as vitamin A derivatives, as well as prescription retinoids; are the types of products that the skin does become acclimated to.

However, the skin does not become used to moisturizers, antioxidants, or peptide products. Peptides are types of amino acid chains.

Skin products have begun using them due to a belief that they stimulate collagen production. That said, you may see a plateau in improvements due to having reached the cream’s maximum change possibility.

Should that be the case, try using a stronger product. You could also try using products with different active ingredients.

If all else fails, ask your doctor for a prescription medication.

Rumor: You Can Do Facial Exercises To Keep Skin Taut

In a word, no…you can’t.

In point of fact, your facial exercises may well speed up the wrinkling process. Your face is similar to a sheet of paper. When you fold it multiple times in the same spot, a crease is formed. It doesn’t take long before the area to become permanently etched.

And before you ask, there’s no solid evidence of any sort of plumping benefits. So you shouldn’t expect facial exercises to help fill out any hollows caused by sagging. These things are caused by a decrease in:

  • Collagen
  • Elastin
  • Fat

Unfortunately, you can’t replace those with exercises.

Rumor: By Age 18, All Skin Damage Has Been Done


Sorry but that’s not even a tiny bit true.

When you expose your skin to UV rays, it becomes damaged. This is true no matter what age you are. So you have to make certain you’re using sunscreen to protect yourself.

If your skin is already damaged, try improving its tone. You can also smooth out fine lines, make sure to exfoliate three times a week and use a gentle, gritty cleanser.

If you’d prefer, you might try a chemical exfoliant such as an alpha hydroxy acid. You should experiment with several different products to see which one works best for your skin. You may also try using a brightening retinol product each night. Stick with it, and your skin will look as good as it can.

So there you have it, 9 skin care myths and misconceptions blown wide open! Hopefully you can get some solace in the fact that skin care actually doesn't have to be so complicated and taking a few precautionary steps, you should be able to achieve fantastic looking skin fairly simply 🙂
