You are beautiful and good looking just the way you are. Never forget that.
However you have taken the decision to get braces for wither cosmetic or health reasons; both are good reasons.
Well I understand that this must be a very weird time for you right now.
How do I know?
Well, I remember getting my braces when I was 14 years old. I was convinced that all anyone could see was my mouth, so I tried to keep it shut most of the time but the problem with that; is that is is actually pretty difficult to keep your mouth shut when you have what seems like a metric ton of metal glued to your teeth!
Not to mention, it seriously hurts!
I gave myself incredible anxiety over something, that, as it turned out, nearly a third of the kids in my class would be experiencing right along with me by freshman year.
Did you know…
That over four million people have braces and 75% of these are teens and young adults. There are numerous reasons that people have to get braces, but regardless of the reasons, the struggles that come from life with braces are all the same.
Here are 9 tips I wish I would have had to help me embrace my braces:
Floss: Food Stuck Under the Wires of Your Braces Will Cause You Embarrassment
Try using a floss pick instead of regular floss.
It’s less likely to get caught in the wire and the pointy end will help you get up under the wire to make sure you didn’t miss anything. There is also the fact that you will probably have received a whole bunch of them from your orthodontist.
Water picks are great for getting the gunk out of your braces as well, and it eliminates the hassle of shredding the floss. If you still prefer the regular style floss, make sure you use the wax coated variety.
Brush: Keep At It & Do It Thoroughly
When brushing with braces, you’ll find that you need to replace your toothbrush more often than before.
Look for one that has soft round bristles and you may want to try an electric toothbrush as well. Finding the best toothbrush for your braces can be tricky but we have you covered.
Some braces wearers feel as though the electric toothbrush gets their teeth and braces cleaner than a manual brush.
Rinse: Your Mouth Breeds Bacteria & Can Attract Unwanted Attention
Use mouthwash every day.
Not only will it freshen your breath but it will help keep your mouth extra clean by killing bacteria in those really hard to reach places.
Note: Try to stay away from alcohol based mouthwash if possible because it can be quite painful; especially if your mouth and gums have been irritated by your braces.
Mouth Care On the Go: Don’t Let Your Braces Keep You Home
Make or buy a travel dental kit!
Use a travel size toothbrush, travel size toothpaste and flosses to keep your teeth and braces clean on the go.
Look for a fun cosmetic or accessories bag to carry your kit in. There’s no embarrassment in brushing your teeth at school when you’re doing it in style 😉
Moisturize: Because Dry Lips Hurt
Your mouth goes through a lot when you have braces, and that includes your lips. I know this pain all too well…cracked lips and sharp metal are not good friends!
Use lip balm throughout the day to keep your lips soft and crack free. Try different brands and flavors to find the kind that works best for you.
There are even color tinted lip balms that are just as effective and they look great too 🙂
Exfoliate: Your Lips Are Type Of Skin Too
Exfoliating your lips can help keep them smooth and prevent dry, cracked lips.
Can’t afford the lip exfoliater kits?
Get a cheap soft bristled tooth brush from your local drugstore. Wet it with water and scrub your lips once a day after you brush.
Apply lip balm and you will be well on your way to preventing chapped lips.
Don’t Hide Your Mouth: Get Creative
For the girls: Use fun lipsticks and lip glosses to play up your beautiful smile. Try some bold colors to really let your personality shine.
For the boys: Just smile more and be proud that you will have some great looking teeth soon!
Don’t let your braces take away from having confidence in yourself.
Add Some Pizazz: Life Is Better In Color
Adding color to your braces can be another way to embrace your braces!
Choose one color or mix it up. You can pick your favorite color or find a shade that best matches your complexion. Any way go, you are making those braces your own.
Smile: You Never Know Who May Be Looking
For anyone new to wearing braces, little things like smiling and moving your mouth can be a challenge at first. Practice smiling in the mirror.
Before you know it your beautiful smile will appear as easily as it did before.
Conclusion: Be Proud
Having braces does not have to mean the end of your life as you know it.
Keep in mind that you are starting a journey that will end with a beautiful set of pearly white and super straight teeth. So go ahead and smile with confidence knowing that you are headed toward a better, healthier you…short term pain for long term gain is the name of the game here 🙂
While you’re at it, share that confidence with a fellow braces wearer. Nothing helps sooth the soreness of having your braces tightened than knowing that you are not in this struggle alone.
So, the next time you see someone with braces, give them your best smile and a little compliment. Not only will you boost their self-esteem, but you will help boost your own.
You never know, it could be the start of a beautiful friendship that culminates into two mouths full of straight teeth.
