How Do Pregnancy Tests Even Work?

It should be simple, right?

A pregnancy test usually attempts to ascertain whether a woman is pregnant or not.

In order for the test to show a negative or positive result, a blood sample or urine of the woman is required because the markers that indicate pregnancy are contained in these substances.

The first indicator of pregnancy is the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced in the cells of fertilized ova (eggs).

However, hCG can only be detected after implantation (when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the wall of the uterus, usually between 9 and 12 days after ovulation).

When a pregnancy test is carried out too early, it could result in a false negative or false positive result because the hCG level in the urine is not high enough.

One such test you can do to see this in action is the bleach pregnancy test, however we would highly recommend that you stick with the ones we have reviewed below.

However, a more reliable method is the blood test, which gives 100% accurate result. It can detect the hCG level in the blood as early as 10 days after a missed period.

This method is rarely used because it costs more and takes longer to get the result unlike with a home pregnancy test (HPT).

HPTs come in different brands, giving women a variety of options to choose from according to what they can afford.

You can actually get many of these tests from your local drugstore, but we have decided to mention the online factor because let's face it, most us shop online in places like Amazon now, anyway!

However this is an issue and for the sake of privacy you don't want these things showing up on your credit card bills, we recommend the following family planning centers that can help you out.

1. First Response Early Result

This standard stick test has enjoyed a lot of positive reviews and rated as the best in detecting early pregnancy as soon as six days before a missed period.

It is said to give 99% accurate result.

There are two ways to use this test: either by holding the tip of the stick in a stream of urine for about five seconds, or by peeing in a container and dipping the tip into the urine for five seconds.

Replace the cap on the tip and lay down the stick to see the result in three minutes.

Two lines (even if one is faint) indicate a positive result, while one line means you are not pregnant.

2. Accu-Clear Early Pregnancy Test

This is another standard stick test that can be used on the first day you expect your period.

The tip of the stick turns pink after you pee on it, and then you wait for three minutes to get the result. One line on the left side of the test window shows that you’re pregnant.

A lack of line indicates you’re not pregnant.

Remember that this test like others rely heavily on the presence of the hCG pregnancy hormone which sometimes does not appear when the test is carried out too early. You might receive a negative result when you are actually pregnant.

In that case, it is advised you wait a few days and take the test again just to be sure.

3. Clearblue Easy

Unlike the previous two stick tests, this one gives you a result within two minutes.

After peeing on the stick, you wait to see a blue line on the control window. A plus sign means you are pregnant, while a minus means you are not.

The digital version of this test tells you exactly how far along you are and has 93% accuracy in detecting when you conceived.

4. E.P.T. Certainty

This brand is a digital stick test that gives you a result in 3 minutes.

Like the others, you have to pee on the tip of the stick and wait for the result, which would indicate either “pregnant or not pregnant”.

During your wait, an hourglass symbol appears, showing you that the result is still being processed.

If the result is inconclusive, a book symbol appears which refers you to instructions to guide you on what to do.

This test can be used at any time of the day right from the first day of a missed period. The E.P.T. Certainty is available in single and double packs.

Buying the double packs is recommended because you can repeat the test if the first one comes out negative or inconclusive.

5. Velocit Eazy

This is an advanced home pregnancy test device that can detect pregnancy as early as the first day of your missed period.

The easy-to-use stick gives 99% accurate result in three minutes.

For best results, it is advised to do the test with your first-morning urine, which is more concentrated and contains a high level of hCG.

The rectangular window confirms whether you are pregnant or not, while the oval window indicates whether the test kit is working correctly.

6. Easy@ Home

This test strip comes in a pack of 20 and is very easy to use.

Simply dip the strip into urine and wait for about a minute to get your result. Two lines mean you’re pregnant, while one line means you’re not.

This test is 99.8% accurate and can detect pregnancy a day before your missed period.

7. BFP Pregnancy Test

BFP means “big fat positive” and this test strip can be used even four days before your missed period.

This pregnancy test boasts of over 99% accuracy and can be used at any time of the day.

Dip the strip into urine and get your result within 1 to 3 minutes. One line means negative and two lines mean (big fat) positive.

You can repeat the test as many times as you want since the BFP test comes in a pack of 20 strips.

8. Watsons

This pregnancy test strip is a one-step and easy-to-use test that you can carry out all by yourself.

Remove the strip from the sealed pouch and dip it into urine, while the arrow points towards the urine. Be sure not to exceed the “MAX” line, as doing so would generate an invalid result.

A positive result will be visible as soon as one minute.

Do not reuse the same strip again and don’t read results after five minutes.

Two lines mean “positive”, one line means “negative” and no line means “invalid”. Do not use the strip if the pouch is punctured or not properly sealed.
